First Director Announced

The BBC have today updated their official Doctor Who site with news of the first person to sit in the directors chair for Series 7, and the lucky man is Saul Metzstein.

Metzstein has previously directed for Upstairs Downstairs, Late Night Shopping and Micro Men and has even picked up a Scottish Bafta for his work along the way.

Filming is due to begin on February 20th in Cardiff.

More Series 7 Writers Confirmed

Two new writers have been confirmed for Series 7 in this months DWM, which you can pick up in stores today.

The first is Chris Chibnall, who has written loads of early Torchwood episodes as well as the Doctor Who stories '42' and 'The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood'.

The second is Toby Whithouse, who has previously written 'School Reunion', 'Vampires of Venice' and 'The God Complex' as well as being head honcho for BBC 3's Being Human.

According to the magazine, Chibnalls story will have the 'biggest ever Doctor Who set', while Whithouse told SFX Magazine that his story is currently planned to air 3rd in the run.

Other writes confirmed so far are Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and John Fay.

The Eternity Clock Trailer

For those of you who haven't had the chance to see it yet, here is the trailer for The Eternity Clock, again. The game, which is being made available on PC and Playstation platforms, will be available this March in Europe, initially on Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. The PC version will be released later in the year.

Series 7 Filming Updates, Rumours and Speculation

According to Matt Smith, filming for him on Series 7 is due to begin on Monday February 20th, with reheasals due to begin a week earlier on Monday February 13th. It has previously been rumoured that Alex Kingston would return to filming as River Song sometime around the 8th or 9th of February, though these dates are unconfirmed.

There is also some potential overseas filming to take place if the following is to be believed. One of our forum members, Oh-Wise-One, has posted this on the forum:

Feel free to shoot this down but a friend of mine who is a bit of an up and coming actor posted on Facebook this week that he had gotten a small role on the show and will be going to Spain to shoot. He takes it all very seriously so I can't imagine why he would lie about it, and he isn't a fanboy so I don't think it is something he would say to get people worked up. A couple of us pressed for more information but he wouldn't budge and then the following morning he deleted the comment. I'd say take it with a pinch of salt, but I have no reason to think he would lie about it either.

As the poster says, this is unconfirmed and should be taken with a huge pinch of salt, but it does open up the possibility that we may have some new information about overseas filming for this year. Australia is another country that had been previously rumoured as a potential location for series 7. The BBC have released some images from the upcoming Doctor Who Playstation release, The Eternity Clock, and I have to say we have all been really impressed by the quality of them.

The Eternity Clock is being created in full high definition for digital download platforms and is set for release this spring, initially on Playstation 3 and PC platforms.

The Eternity Clock will immerse gamers in the universe of Doctor Who, allowing them to take on the role of the Doctor and River Song as they travel across time and space to save the Earth. Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries.

Dark Horizons

DARK HORIZONS

BBC Books have announced another novel in their new line of originial Doctor Who Novels, which will be released this Summer.

The novel will feature the 11th Doctor, as played by Matt Smith, as its hero, in a story set in Viking times. The location is the northern shore of an island off the coast of Scotland, where the islanders live in fear of a Viking attack. Then The Burning comes, consuming everything in its path.

The novel is penned by Jenny (J.T) Colgan, who is a self proclaimed 'superfan' of Doctor Who. It is 320 pages long and will be published on July 7th. More novels are planned for later release from Alastair Reynolds and Steven Baxter.

Gatiss, Fay, Confirmed Writers For Series 7

In last weeks newly released Doctor Who Magazine, Mark Gatiss, who had taken over the Production Notes feature, revealed that he would be penning a script for the upcoming seventh series of Doctor Who. While talking about pitching his story to Moffat, he gave three clues as to what it might be about. “Meat”, “Klaxon” and “Vienna”. A story set abroad, perhaps?

Gatiss has previously written The Unquiet Dead, The Idiot's Lantern, Victory of the Daleks and most recently, Night Terrors, as well as appearing in different roles in some episodes including The Lazarus Experiment and The Wedding Of River Song.

This news, although late being posted here, has been on our forum for nearly a week, and response to the news of him writing for the show again has been mainly negative. His previous stories seem to have very much divided opinion.

Gatiss is the third confirmed writer for Series 7, alongside Steven Moffat and John Fay. John Fay has previously written for Torchwood, but this is his first Doctor Who outing. He recently penned episode 9 of Miracle Day as well as two episodes of Children Of Earth, including the now infamous Day 4.

At Least 14 Episodes For Series 7

During a short interview with the Radio Times, when asked about the series next year, Moffat has promised that it will definately air in Autumn 2012 and to expect at least 14 episodes. With emphasis on the 'at least'.

“There will never be a better time to be a Doctor Who fan, I absolutely promise you that,” says showrunner Steven Moffat on the topic of the series’ forthcoming 50th anniversary in 2013.

When quizzed about Doctor Who’s return later in 2012, Moffat did his utmost to encourage fan speculation by saying that there would be “at least” 14 episodes in series seven.

The emphasis that Moffat puts on the words 'at least' in the interview indicate that we could be in for more than the standard amount. In a previous interview it was said that this year they are filming more episodes than ever before.

Worlds In Time, the new MMORPG created by Three Rings design and centred on Doctor Who is getting ever closer to it's launch, and you can now preview the game online.

Within the game, players will be able to control the TARDIS while completing challenges and puzzles set by the Doctor to save the universe from various enemies. Unit Files Box Set Release

Coming to DVD on January 12th is the Unit Files Box Set, a 3 disc, 2 story set featuring offerings from both the Third and Fourth Doctors.

The two serials contained in the set are the 1974 Third Doctor serial Invasion of the Dinosaurs and the 1975 Fourth Doctor serial The Android Invasion.

The selected stories have caused debate amongst fans about whether they were the best candidates to feature in a 'UNIT' release, but with so few stories remaining unreleased they are possibly the most fitting without rereleasing older stories again.

Review: Eighth Doctor Audio - Orbis

With a new year we start a new season of the New Eighth Doctor Audios. Paul Mcgann returns for a third season alongside Sheridan Smith in Orbis...

The Doctor has fallen to his death. His companion, Lucie Miller, has returned to her life on Earth, grief-stricken. Then, one night, an alien visitor arrives at her front door and shoots her.

Could it be that Lucie’s days with the Doctor are not over? She will only find the answer on the planet Orbis. A planet where all forms of life are facing violent extinction.

So What's Right With It? - After what was a pretty weak finale to the second series, series three of the New EDAs kicks off with what might just be the strongest in the run to date. The plot of this audio is absolutely outstanding and brought to life brilliantly. The planet is brilliantly realised with lots of new creatures and aliens thrown into the mix, all a bit odd but all greatly described and presented. Smith and Mcgann play so well off each other and the dialogue between the two has hit a really steady groove with some brilliant one liners and funny bits. The ending of the story isn't at all what you would expect. The story takes a bit of a dark turn which is a bit of a gamble given the rest of the story, but the gamble pays off and it's a brilliant conclusion. The Headhunter returns in what is one of her best outings yet, stepping up her campy evil a couple of notches and keeping the character from going stale and the rest of the guest cast performs really well, too. Unlike a lot of the second series, and much of the first, this story isn't too wrapped in canon and continuity, which makes it easy to jump in to if you have perhaps missed previous stories and would also make a good jumping on point if you are new to the audios.

But What's Wrong With It? - Not a lot really. The biggest downside for me is that with Smith and Mcgann playing so well together, their interaction here is minimal and I think they really missed a trick there. They are obviously able to hold your attention seperately but their chemistry just sparks when they get to play off each other, so they could have used that more to the stories advantage.

Final Verdict - A near pefect season opener and a brilliant return for Eight and Lucie.

Orbis get's 5/5 TARDIS's

Extra Info: 60 minutes long (or 2 x 30 minutes depending on the version you purchased) on one disc with interviews and a Q&A as bonus features. Amazon have it for £9.89 which is pricier than most, but it's worth every penny.

Ratings For The Christmas Special

Official ratings for this year's Christmas Special, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe have been announced at 10.77m viewers with a time shift of 1.85 million, becoming the third most watched show of the week. The show also managed to take the largest audience share of any show for the evening with 37.3% of the available audience tuning into the show during it's timeslot.

These figures don't include the people who tuned in to iPlayer to see the episode within 7 days.

Doctor Who In 2011

With the dawn of the new year upon us, what better time is there to look back over the last 12 months in the Whoniverse?

JANUARY

2011 kicked off with a huge amount of new merchandise being released. Peri and the Piscon Paradox, Prisoner of the Sun, The Crimes Of Thomas Brewster and Series 2 of Jago and Litefoot were all released to audio. IDW entered the world of Doctor Who comics with their ongoing Eleventh Doctor series putting out it's first issue and the DVD world was graced with the releases of Meglos, The Mutants and A Christmas Carol. Over in LA, production began on the fourth series of spin off series Torchwood, while in the UK, production on Series 6 of Doctor Who continued in Cardiff. At the National Television Awards, where a specially filmed Doctor Who themed segment opened the show, Doctor Who lost out on the award for Best Drama to Waterloo Road, to the shock of many.

February saw the release of several new audio adventures. The Feast Of Axos, Lucie Miller, The Perpetual Bond and Short Trips Vol. 2 all saw CD releases, while the First Doctor story The Ark got it's first DVD release. The end of February brought with it the sad news that Nicholas Courtney, famous for playing Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart for over 40 years, had passed away on the 22nd. DWM announced a special dedication issue would be released in his honour.

MARCH
March brought with it a host of new audio adventures for fans in the form of The Forbidden Time, To The Death, Industrial Evolution and Short Trips Vol.3. The Mara Tales Box Set release gave us Kinda and Snakedance on DVD while the Revisitations 2 Box Set contained rereleases of Carnival Of Monsters, Ressurection Of The Daleks and The Seeds Of Death. Meanwhile, fans of the show were treated to two mini episodes in aid of Comic Relief. Space & Time were the first televised episodes to be set and filmed entirely in the TARDIS since 1964's The Edge Of Destruction.

APRIL

Heroes Of Sontar, Thin Ice and The Sentinals of the New Dawn were the audio releases for April, while the Third Doctors regeneration story Planet Of The Spiders was released to DVD. On the 19th April the world was shocked to learn of the passing of the brilliant Elisabeth Sladen from cancer. Elisabeth had been playing Sarah Jane Smith on and off since 1973 and was currently in production of the fifth series of her own spin off show, The Sarah Jane Adventures. Fandom rallied round and raised over £20,000 in her honour to be donated to the hospice that cared for her. A week later Series 6 of Doctor Who hit the airwaves with The Impossible Astronaut taking in nearly 9 million viewers on initial airing as well as breaking the world record for the most recorded show ever, with 4.1m viewers. The episode was dedicated to the memory of Elisabeth Sladen. Part two, Day Of The Moon, aired the following week and closed out the month.

MAY

The month of May saw the release of Kiss of Death, Crime Of The Century and Ferril's Folly on audio CD. The release of the Mannequin Mania Box Set saw a reissue of Spearhead From Space released alongside Terror Of The Autons, while the Fifth Doctor story Frontios also got it's release this month. Series 6 continued on BBC1 airing four episodes throughout the month, The Curse Of The Black Spot, The Doctor's Wife, The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People brought in steady ratings and took the show to the top of the iPlayer charts each week.

JUNE

Rat Trap, Animal and The Cold Equations all saw audio releases in June, as did the third series of Jago and Litefoot. The DVD world saw the release of the Earth Story Box Set which contained the First Doctor story The Gunfighters alongside the Fifth Doctor serial The Awakening, meaning that every Fifth Doctor serial was now available on DVD. Over on BBC1, A Good Man Goes to War rounded out the first half of Series 6, taking the show into a summer hiatus before returning in the Autumn. Behind the scenes it was announced that Piers Wenger was stepping down as Exectuive Producer on the show but that Series 7 and a 2012 Christmas special had been commissioned and that Matt Smith would remain in the role. Danny Cohen, controller of BBC1 announced that Series 7 would air over 2 years, which was later denied by Steven Moffat, but no new official announcement was made either way.

JULY

Robophobia, Earth Aid and Tales From The Vault were the audio releases for July, followed by the DVD releases of the Seventh Doctor serial Paradise Towers and Series 6 Part 1. Filling the gap left by Doctor Who, Torchwood returned to UK screens after a two year absense with Miracle Day amidst controversy over premiering in the US before the UK. Episodes aired throughout July were The New World, Rendition and The Dead Of Night. While attending the ComicCon event in the US, Karen Gillan confirmed to the world that she will be returning to Doctor Who for the seventh series. In a film collectors attic in the south of England, episode 3 of the First Doctor story Galaxy 4 was found after being thought lost for more than 30 years, though the fact was kept secret until December.

AUGUST
Recorded Time and Other Stories and The Rocket Men were released on audio alongside Short Trips Vol.4, while The Sun Makers was the only DVD to be released this month. Torchwood gathered pace on BBC1 airing Escape To LA, The Catagories Of Life, The Middle Men and Immortal Sins. Doctor Who made it's long awaited return to screens with the second half of Series 6 and the story Let's Kill Hitler.

SEPTEMBER
The Doomsday Quatrain, House Of Blue Fire and The Memory Cheats all saw their audio releases in September, while Day Of The Daleks saw it's DVD release. Torchwood came to a close airing it's final three episodes with The End Of The Road, The Gathering and The Blood Line rounding out the fourth series of the show. Doctor Who continued with the second half of Series 6, airing 4 episodes, Night Terrors, The Girl Who Waited, The God Complex and Closing Time. In the same dusty attic as before, a second 'lost' episode was found in the form of The Underwater Menace, episode 2, bringing the total amount of lost episodes down to 106. Again, this was kept under wraps until December.

OCTOBER

The Elite, The Silver Turk and The Many Deaths Of Jo Grant were all released on audio CD this month while the DVD world was represented by the release of Colony In Space and the fourth series of SJA. The Sixth Series of Doctor Who was rounded out with the airing of The Wedding Of River Song, but a special Mini Episode created and written by primary school children from Basingstoke made its screen debut on Doctor Who Confidential. It was titled Death Is The Only Answer. The Sarah Jane Adventures returned to screens with it's fifth and final series. Due to the death of it's star, Elisabeth Sladen, only three stories, Sky, The Curse Of Clyde Langer and The Man Who Never Was, were completed, all of which aired during October to great figures and acclaim. The first game of the second series of Doctor Who Adventure Games was made available to download, titled The Gunpowder Plot and featured the TARDIS team facing Sontarans in Jacobean London. With the ending of Series 6 of Doctor Who came the announcement that Doctor Who Confidential would be taken off the air.

NOVEMBER
Audio releases during November were made up of The Witch From The Well, Hexagora and The First Wave. The fourth series of Torchwood, Miracle Day, was released on DVD, as was Series 6 of Doctor Who. Matt Smith auctioned off his Doctor costume for Children in Need, raising over £50k while on the same evening the title for the Christmas Special, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, was announced alongside a teaser clip for the story.

DECEMBER

The Children Of Seth and Army Of Death were this months audio releases, but for the first month of the year, no DVD's were given a release for December. Christmas came early for Doctor Who fans when it was announced at a special gathering in London that two classic episodes had been recovered from a collectors attic. Steven Moffat announced that Amy and Rory would be leaving the show during Series 7 and a new companion would join the Doctor for his travels. It was also revealed that there were no intentions to include any two part stories in the next series, but it would see the return of 'a couple' of classic villains from the 60's and 70's. The Doctor The Widow and the Wardrobe aired to strong audiences figures but a mixed reaction on Christmas Day, rounding out 2011 in the world of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who at the NTA's

The nominees for the National Television Awards have been announced with Doctor Who leading the pack alongside Downton Abbey with 3 nominations.

The Show itself is up for the prestigious Best Drama Series award, which in a surprise turn of events was last year taken home by school drama Waterloo Road.

Matt Smith will be competing for the title of Best Actor again this year alongside Karen Gillan who is nominated for Best Actress.

The awards will be announced on January 25th.

Series 7 News Roundup

With Series 7 being moved to the Autumn schedules and filming on the new series not due to start until February, new news is a little on the thin side, but thanks to Moffs appearance at the BFI screening of The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe as well as little hints in DWM, there are a few interesting facts about the next series that are worth looking at. As we haven't been around much to report on the updates, here is a roundup of what we know so far:

Amy and Rory will be leaving the show 'at some point' during Series 7 in what Steven Moffat has described as a 'heartbreaking' end to their story. It has been speculated that it will be Rory's (final) death that brings an end to their travels, though of course this is speculation and the details are likely to be kept top secret.
With the departure of the latest companions must come the arrival of the newest. Absolutely nothing is known about who will be taking the place of the Ponds, but it has been hinted that it will just be one companion this time around.
Although not confirmed officially, Moffat has said that he expects River Song to return in the new series.
Moffat has also revealed that he has no plans for Series 7 to contain any two part stories, saying "At this stage, everything is a single episode, and the only reason anything will become a two-parter is if we think it needs to be; not so much that the story is too long for 45 minutes, because nothing is too long for 45 minutes, but if it feels as though there are two distinct stages to the story."
He also gave us a tiny hint about what to expect from the opening story of Series 7. "The first episode I’m writing is called '_____ of the _____' and it’ll feel a bit like Die Hard, that first episode."
Marcus Wilson, who acts as producer on the show, has revealed that Series 7 will see the return of 'a couple' of classic villains/monsters from the 1960's and 70's. Review: Third Doctor Audio - Paradise Of Death

Our latest forum review comes from the brilliant Vampyros Adric who this time has shifted his focus to the Third Doctor in the audio story The Paradise Of Death.....

I've held off from this one as it lays open a can of worms "canon-wise". But no, I must look straight into the eye of the time vortex and think that if the movie is canon, then this story must be at least half canon. Although the "Blurb on the back of the box" man must have been paid by the word for this, I will still give you the benefit of his wisdom to set the scene.

"When a horrific and inexplicable death occurs at Space world, a new theme park on Hampstead Heath, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and UNIT are called to investigate."

The Paradise of Death was like a life-belt, tossed into the barren, Who-Free waters of the early nineties. A full cast audio adventure..with Jon Pertwee... And UNIT...written by Barry Letts.... YES PLEASE!!! Therefore when you listen to this, try and see it in that context and the whole thing becomes easier to love. I must confess, although this story gets a fair bit of stick from the fans, I really enjoy it. It has a tangible beginning, middle and end. The bad guys are fairly bad and the good guys are awesome. Special little mentions must go to the three "stars" Pertwee, Sladen and Courtney who are all utterly brilliant - having been written for radio, some of the dialogue can be a little ponderous at times, but this is all necessary exposition. The pacing is generally good and the beginning and the ending of the story belts along.

To be sure, it is not without its problems. This is undoubtedly "Who-by-Numbers" with very little to surprise or shock. Lis Sladen's dialogue is especially clunky given her role of our "eyes and ears" in the Whoniverse. Furthermore, towards the middle there is a little feeling of padding. This could easily have been a four parter and had it been so, would have been perfectly paced.

Nonetheless, this is a perfectly enjoyable romp which suits being an audio adventure. It will never shake any trees, but is a great way to spend a couple of hours with some old friends.

Doctor Who Comes To Playstation 3

Due to our recent downtime we are a little late reporting on this, but it's better late than never. Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock is the brand new game being created in full high definition by BBC Worldwide for digital download platforms and is set for release in early this year on Playstation 3 and PC platforms.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock will immerse gamers in the universe of Doctor Who, allowing them to take on the role of the Doctor and River Song as they travel across time and space to save the Earth. Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries.

A wholly new storyline has been developed especially for this new Doctor Who console game franchise, written in collaboration with the BBC Wales team. Photo-real graphics, television quality scenes and highly realistic characters will bring the world of Doctor Who to life immersing fans completely in the twists and turns of an action filled plot. The stars of the series Matt Smith (the Doctor) and Alex Kingston (River Song) have recorded full voiceovers for their characters in Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock and motion capture has been used to create in-game characters that are incredibly realistic providing the ultimate Doctor Who gaming experience. The game is being developed by Supermassive Games.

Two more Doctor Who console game titles are already in development and are planned to follow this release. More details are expected to be released in the Spring.

More Classic Novel Rereleases

Sarah Jane Comes To DVD

February sees the release of not one, but two DVD box sets from The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Both DVDs are scheduled for release on February 6th. The first is The Complete Fifth Series and covers the final adventures of Sarah Jane Smith.

All three two-part episodes from the fifth series of the ‘Doctor Who’ spin-off, created by the award-winning writer, Russell T. Davies.

The programme follows the adventures of one of the Doctor’s most famous former companions, investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), as she faces all manner of alien life-forms and restores Earth’s cosmic balance with the help of her young assistants Clyde (Daniel Anthony), Luke (Tommy Knight) and Rani (Anjli Mohindra). Episodes are: ‘Sky’, ‘The Curse of Clyde Langer’ and ‘The Man Who Never Was’.

Join The Infinite Quest - The Gunfighters

This week over on the forum, the featured story is The Gunfighters. Come on over and give us your thoughts and opinions on this classic First Doctor adventure from 1966.

Arriving in the town of Tombstone, the First Doctor finds himself involved with gunmen, out to kill Doc Holliday...

The Gunfighters was the eighth story of Season 3 of Doctor Who. Its final episode, "The O. K. Corral", was the last individually-titled episode until The Five Doctors, the ninety-minute 20th Anniversary special.

This story saw Doctor Who's take on the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. William Hartnell would later claim that the Wild West setting was his idea, a statement which was confirmed on the DVD bonus features. The director, Rex Tucker, was originally chosen to direct An Unearthly Child but filming interfered with a holiday he had booked. This was Tucker's only Who credit.

The Gunfighters was the only serial to have a song written especially for it until The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, decades later. "The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon" was sung off screen by Lynda Baron who would later appear in Enlightenment and Closing Time.

The role of Johnny Ringo was offered to veteran actor Patrick Troughton, but he was too busy. Troughton would later be asked back, and won the role of the Second Doctor. The actor playing Doc Holliday, Anthony Jacobs, brought his son, Matthew Jacobs onto the set. Matthew would later write the telemovie.

The poor AI ratings received by The Gunfighters strengthened Donald Cotton's argument that historical stories should be axed.

The Doctor Down Under?

Since the show returned to our screens in 2005, the production team behind Doctor Who has been known to occasionally venture beyond the UK borders for a spot of filming. Aside from last years filming for series 6 in Utah, United States, the show has also filmed in Italy, Dubai and Croatia over the last couple of years, but is the show about to take a trip to Australia?

According to Australias TV Tonight Blog, plans could be afoot to film parts of series 7 Down Under.

TV Tonight is hearing whispers from the UK that the long-running science-fiction series is considering a move to film multiple episodes in Australia in mid-2012.

This is of course news to us, and they don't appear to have a source for their information so it could all just be made up, but if true this could be potentially interesting news for the next series.

Christmas Confidential Cancelled?

Despite the fact that we were promised one final Confidential to accompany this years Christmas Special, The Sun are reporting that the BBC have decided to scrap it, despite it already being made and paid for.

Series producer Gillane Seaborne claims "The biggest regret is the episode of Confidential we've filmed for this year's Doctor Who Christmas special which now won't be shown, So I guess in the fine traditions of Doctor Who, we now have our very own missing episode."

Industry experts put the cost of an episode of the show, which was presented by Alastair Sooke, at around £50,000 but possibly more.

Will be a shame if this is true? What do you think? Since its already been made should they just air it anyway or would you rather just see it as an extra on the DVD?

Christmas Special Transmission Times (UK & US)

The official DW Twitter feed yesterday confirmed that this years Christmas specia, The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe, will be airing on BBC One on Christmas Day at 7pm and will run for an hour.

As well as this, the BBC America schedule has confirmed that this years special will once again on Christmas Day in the United States at 9pm EST (though other regions will vary so check your local listings.

A death at an abandoned coal pit brings UNIT and the Doctor to the South Wales town of Llanfairfach when the body is found glowing bright green. Are pollutants from Global Chemicals responsible? Where are the Giant Maggots coming from? And who is the mysterious BOSS?

The Green Death was the fifth and final story of the Doctor Who anniversary tenth season. The story is notable in that it marked the departure of companion Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning.

Fandom

Sometimes it can be hard to be a fan of something brilliant.

Fandom in general, especially when it comes to a show that people get as passionate about as Doctor Who, can often come surrounded by negativity. A show like Doctor Who, with it's many incarnations and variations, means that most fans feel very differently from each other about what is right and good for the show. Who really is the best Doctor? Who has written the best stories? What really is the best direction for the show to take? These and a thousand other questions have kept fans debating since the show began nearly 50 years ago. The thing is, none of these questions has a definative answer. The best we can do is choose our own favourites and respect others for theirs, because more often than not we as fans will disagree about these things.

Between the forum and our Twitter feed we get to listen to a lot of different opinions about the show and its direction and now seems like a time when fandom is as split as it ever has been. Perhaps Matt Smith is the worst Doctor who ever graced our screens. In your opinion. Perhaps River Song is the worst character ever introduced to a show ever. In your opinion. Maybe you love Amy so much that the thought of her departure makes you want to tear your hair out. It's YOUR opinion. And totally your right to feel that way.

It's a shame that all too often people seem determined to tell you that your opinion is wrong and theirs is the right one. The number of people I have seen mention that they feel uncomfortable talking about the show or what they like is such a shame to see. The beauty of this show is that it has such a deep, rich history that there is stuff in there for everybody to like and just because not everyones opinions match, it doesn't make any of us any less of a 'fan'.

Over on the forum we have always strived to have a place that is open to all fans regardless of what they like (or dislike) and where people can chat freely without being told that their opinions are wrong. There is a (and we must stress this word) 'small' section of fandom who feel the need to take aim at people because of their views on things. This isn't restricted to Doctor Who fandom, and certainly isn't limited to fandom in general, but it's a shame that when it comes to Doctor Who, it seems to be this section of fandom that gains the most attention. Those that shout the loudest, as they say...

Regardless of what you like, fans of this show all have one huge thing in common. Doctor Who. Whether you started watching it yesterday or haven't liked an episode since Jon Pertwee was strolling around in his velvet dinner jacket, the show and it's potential is what keeps bringing us back and debating. We won't always agree and we won't always like the same things, but the greatest strength of this show is it's ability to change, evolve and regenerate and what you don't like today might just be your favourite aspect to the show tomorrow. In the meantime all we can do is be respectful of each others opinions and hope that others are respectful of ours.

The official synopsis for the Christmas Special has been released:

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home, in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor.

He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish.

Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever.

The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true…

The Doctor, the Widow & the Wardrobe is expected to air on BBC One on Christmas Day like previous Christmas Specials. The time will be announced nearer to Christmas.

We can infer from it that the story will possibly be loosely based on C.S Lewis's classic story 'The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.'

An article on The Guardian's website has revealed that Doctor Who behind the scenes show Doctor Who Confidential is the latest victim of the corporation's budget cuts.

The BBC Doctor Who website have confirmed this news & added that the upcoming episode (due to be aired on Saturday 1st October at 8.35pm) will be the last.

This is from The Guardian article:

Doctor Who Confidential, which features behind-the-scenes footage from the making of Doctor Who as well as interviews with the cast and crew, has aired in an early evening slot on BBC3 since 2005, when the corporation revived the main series with Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Time Lord.

However, with the corporation facing budget cuts of up to 20% across its output as part of its "Delivering Quality First" initiative, BBC controller Zai Bennett has chosen to axe the show at the end of its current series.

Bennett is understood to be pursuing a strategy of focusing investment on original commissions in post-watershed time slots.

Speaking last month at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, Bennett said: "It's about focusing my budget on 9pm and 10pm; those are the time slots that count. Budgets are tight, so we have to be sensible with the money we have."

Personally I have really enjoyed the behind the scenes clips & the extra peeks at the cast that we got to see on DWC so I'm not happy about this latest development.

Unnofficial Overnight ratings for episode 12 of Series 6, Closing Time, have come in today at a respectable 5.3m viewers, making it the third most watched programme of the day.

This is slightly up on the 5.2 recieved by last weeks story The God Complex.

This week we pay just our second visit so far to The Sixth Doctor and see the first appearance of The Rani in 1985s The Mark Of The Rani.

In 19th century England, the Doctor finds himself facing two competing enemies: his old adversary, the Master, and the Rani, another Time Lord with a sinister plan. The local population is turning violent and unpredictable and with a major meeting of the brains of the Industrial Revolution due to happen in the village soon, the Doctor must work out what exactly is causing all the problems. Only the Doctor can stop both the Master and the Rani's evil plans.

The Mark of the Rani was the third story of Season 22 of Doctor Who. A new Time Lord villain, the Rani, was introduced in this serial.

The BBC Press Office have released the synopses for the second story of the final series of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The story is called The Curse of Clyde Langer and will air in two parts, with part one on Monday 10th October & part two on Tuesday 11th October.

Here is the synopsis for each episode:

Episode 1

It's raining fish from the skies, and Sarah Jane's investigations lead the gang to the Museum of Culture, where the ancient god Hetocumtek may offer answers. But when Clyde acts the fool once too often, family and friends savagely turn against him, and he is thrown out of their lives!

Episode 2

Clyde is alone and abandoned on the streets of London, living rough, cold and hungry. One person reaches out to him, but as they become friends, he's warned about the legendary Night Dragon. In Bannerman Road, Sky knows something's wrong – why do Sarah Jane and Rani suddenly hate Clyde?

Scheduling Series Seven

This months Doctor Who Magazine have confirmed that Series 7 will indeed be moved back to an Autumn 2012 slot.

Earlier this year, after several tweets from BBC personel, newspaper articles and magazine stories, much of fandom was left confused about when exactly the next series of Doctor Who would air, with many concerned due to one particular article, that the series was being cut with less episodes transmitted, something that Steven Moffat was quick to deny.

We still have no confirmation about how the stories will air, be it in one long run, split either side of Christmas or something completely different that none of us have thought of yet, but this news from DWM confirms, if any confirmation were needed, that Series 7 of the show will indeed launch in the Autumn, so savour the next couple of episodes because after Christmas it could be a long old wait.

The Lion, The Witch And The.... TARDIS??

Yesterday the BBC released some information about the guest stars that we can expect to see in this years Christmas Special (which you can check out HERE), but over on the forum earlier today, Twisted-Sister posted an article from todays Daily Star who claim to have some insider knowledge about what we can expect from the Time Lord at Christmas.

In their article, they report:

Doctor Who fans had better brace themselves for a Narnia-style festive special.

Show boss Steven Moffat is planning lots of snow, chases through a wintry The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe-style forest, plus an icy baddie.

Moffat, 49, teased: “If you thought last year’s show was the most Christmassy ever, then think again.”

The special sees the Time Lord (Matt Smith, 28) crash land in war-torn England. Posing as the caretaker of a creepy old house in Dorset he embarks on a magical mystery adventure with Madge Arwell and her two children, Lily and Cyril.

The three have been evacuated from London as the capital comes under attack during World War Two.

And there’s plenty of surprises as the Doctor leads them into a new world.

The Daily Star of course aren't exactly known for being the most reliable of sources, but they have on occassion got it spot on, so while we advise you to take the Narnia theme with a pinch of salt, it may also be something to keep an eye on.

With the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine comes a wealth of new spoilers and tidbits of what to expect for the future, with some interesting things to look forward to with the upcoming Series 6 Finale.

Over on the forum, PopRockGeek and Twisted-Sister have been busy putting some of the best bits together, and here is a little of what you can expect.

First up we have the synopsis of the episode as well as a little dialogue (both of which can be found in the latest DWM, released today)

Synopsis

The city of London, 22 April 2011 – soaring buildings, glittering and mighty under a perfect blue sky, and life tumbling onto pavements below. And horse-drawn Roman chariots driving through the streets. And a Victorian steam train on a monorail… hang on, like in a sci-fi city, but with Romans and steam trains? And hot air balloons? And pterodactyls? And Charles Dickens appearing on BBC One’s Breakfast! Something isn’t quite right…

In Buckingham Senate, at 5.02pm, Holy Roman Emperor Winston Churchill calls for his Soothsayer to be fetched from the Tower. Greying, unkempt, older, tireder, but unmistakably – it’s the Doctor. “Tick tock goes the clock,” Winston tells him, “but they don’t, do they? The clocks never tick.” It’s always 5.02pm these days. All of history is happening at once. “What happened to time?” asks Winston. The answer, it seems, is a woman…

Dialogue

DORIUM: “On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no living creature may speak falsely or fail to give answer, a question will be asked. A question that must never, ever be answered.”

THE DOCTOR: ‘”Silence will fall when the question is asked…’”

DORIUM: ‘”Silence must fall’ would be a better translation. The Silence are determined that the question must never be answered. The Doctor must never reach Trenzalore.

THE DOCTOR: “I don’t understand? What’s it got to do with me?”

DORIUM: “The first question. The oldest question in the universe, hidden in plain sight. Would you like to know what it is?”

THE DOCTOR: “Yes!”

DORIUM: “…Are you sure?”

Casting
Simon Callow will be returning to the series after 6 years as Charles Dickens. Most of you will remember him from the Ninth Doctor story The Unquiet Dead. Mark Gatiss will be playing a viking (confirmed by BlogtorWho), Ian Mcneice will return as Churchill after his stint in 2010s Victory Of The Daleks and Alex Kingston and Frances Barber will return as River Song and Kovarian respectively.

As the Doctor makes his final journey to the shores of Lake Silencio in Utah, he knows only one thing can keep the universe safe - his own death - in the concluding episode of the time travelling drama. But has he reckoned without the love of a good woman?

Firstly they have given us a few of the guest stars. They are:

Ratings Update

Saturday nights premier of The God Complex finished the day third overall across all channels bringing in 5.2m overnight viewers. The episode, which saw a dip from last weeks overnights should see a significant rise and continue this years trend once timeshifted viewing has been taken into account. The episode also scored an AI of 86, considered excellent.

The final ratings for last weeks The Girl Who Waited have come in at a very impressive 7.6 million viewers, with 1.6m of those timeshifting to watch after the initial broadcast via iPlayer and other means.

Meanwhile Torchwood: Miracle Day episode 9 brought in a healthy 4.63 million viewers with timeshift taken into account.

Filming on this years Christmas Special has been continuing in Wales, with scenes being filmed yesterday in Bute Esplanade, where Amy and Rory's new home is situated, with Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill both seen on set.

DoctorWhoSpoilers has got their hands on some photographs, which you can see has the houses decked out in Christmas lights with the TARDIS prop situated on the opposite side of the street.

This filming comes after last weeks reports of filming at Stradey Castle in Llanelli. It was previously unknown whether or not the due would be a part of this year's special, though Karen Gillan has previously confirmed that they will make appearances throughout series 7.

In the last few days of his life, the Doctor pays a farewell visit to his old friend Craig, and encounters a mystery, as the time-travelling drama continues.

This episode sees the return of James Corden as Craig Owens (previously seen in the S5 episode 'The Lodger').

Also tucked away in the Week 40 press release from the BBC is the announcement that the fifth & final series if The Sarah Jane Adventures will premiere on Monday 3rd October on CBBC. The second part of the first story will be broadcast on Tuesday 4th October.

It also gives synopses of the two parts of the first story 'Sky.'

Part One:

Sarah Jane finds a baby girl on her doorstep and tries to find out who abandoned her. At a nearby nuclear power station, a beautiful woman appears out of thin air and uses alien powers to take control. She's looking for something – and realises that Sarah Jane may just have it.

Part Two:

Sky has undergone an amazing transformation, but in doing so has triggered a countdown that no one can stop. As Sarah Jane and Sky find themselves trapped between the alien war fought by Metalkind and Fleshkind, Clyde and Rani face a race against time to stop the biggest bang in history.

The time: 1959. The place: Shangri-La holiday camp, South Wales. The Seventh Doctor and Mel want time out. The hedonistic alien Navarinos want to catch some vintage rock and roll, and two CIA agents want to know what happened to their country's missing satellite.

When the beautiful Chimeron princess Delta shows up on the scene, the murderous Bannermen soon follow in hot pursuit. The stage is set for a fiery showdown that will decide the fate of an entire civilisation.

Delta and the Bannermen was the third story in the twenty-fourth season of Doctor Who. It was the first serial since Planet of Giants to utilise a three-part format, and was the first to do so intentionally. Following Delta, the three-parter would become a standard feature of the McCoy era.

While under the working title Flight of the Chimeron, it was originally scripted that Mel should leave at the end of this story; she was to be replaced by a character called Ace. Ultimately Langford chose to stay and Ace's character became Ray. The name Ace was used for a companion who joined in the following story, Dragonfire.

Here is the somewhat brief, but spoilery, synopsis for the episode:

In the last few days of his life, the Doctor pays a farewell visit to his old friend Craig, and encounters a mystery, as the time-travelling drama continues.

People are going missing, a silver rat scuttles in the shadows of a department store, and somewhere close by the Cybermen are waiting…

This episode sees the return of James Corden as Craig Owens (previously seen in the S5 episode 'The Lodger').

Back in July we ran a story about the Series 6 pt 2 boxset being released in October, but at the time there was only provisional artwork. Well now the final artwork has been revealed & as you can see from the images above it has changed significantly from the provisional design.

The boxset will include the episodes 'Let's Kill Hitler,' 'Night Terrors,' 'The Girl Who Waited,' 'The God Complex,' 'Closing Time' & the series finale 'The Wedding of River Song.'

The special features will feature Monster Files on The Antibodies & The Cybermats.

The boxset will be released on October 10th & is available for pre-order from Amazon.

Here is the synopsis for the episode:

The TARDIS lands in what looks like an ordinary hotel, as the time-travelling drama continues. But the walls move, corridors twist and rooms vanish. There is a room for every visitor that concerns their deepest, darkest fears. Fears that will kill them. What lies in the Doctor's room? And when his turn comes, will he welcome death like all the rest?

This episode co-stars David Walliams (star of 'Little Britain,' & many other shows) as Gibbis.

The BBC Press Office has released information for some of the shows that are airing on Saturday 10th September and among them is episode 10 of Doctor Who, 'The Girl Who Waited.'

Here is the synopsis for the episode:

Amy is trapped in a quarantine facility for victims of an alien plague – a plague that will kill the Doctor in a day – as the time-travelling drama continues.

The Doctor can use the TARDIS to smash through time and break in, but then Rory is on his own. He must find Amy and bring her back to the TARDIS before the alien doctors can administer their medicine.

Rory is about to encounter a very different side to his wife. Can he rescue Amy before she is killed by kindness?

Radio Times reveals Episode 13 title

The latest issue of the Radio Times has revealed the title of the series 6 finale.

It is to be called 'The Wedding of River Song.'

This has also now been added to the episode guide on the BBC Doctor Who site.

I suspect this title is going to be a bit controversial in some quarters. However, much like previous titles 'The Doctor's Daughter,' 'The Doctor's Wife' & The Sarah Jane Adventures episode 'The Death of the Doctor,' before it I think this one will also turn out to be a bit misleading.

Another award for Doctor Who

The 2011 Hugo Awards have been announced and it was another good night for Doctor Who.

The award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form was taken by the series 5 finale - 'The Pandorica Opens'/'The Big Bang,' written by Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes.

The win continues writer Steven Moffat's success at the Hugo Awards. He has previously won the same award for 'The Empty Child'/'The Doctor Dances,' 'The Girl in the Fireplace' and 'Blink.'

Last year's award also went to Doctor Who as 'The Waters of Mars' clinched victory.

This latest win means that the show has taken the award almost every year since 2006, the only exception being 2009.

There was also a Doctor Who themed win in the Best Related Work category as the award went to the book 'Chicks Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the Women Who Love It' edited by Lynne M Thomas & Tara O'Shea.

Episode 12 title revealed by BBC America

A BBC America press release about the second half of series 6 has revealed the title of the 12th episode.

The episode will be called 'Closing Time.' It is written by Gareth Roberts, who was also responsible for last year's episode, 'The Lodger,' as well a number of other episodes since the show returned in 2005.

As well as marking the return of Gareth Roberts to writing duties, 'Closing Time' sees Craig (James Corden) & Sophie (Daisy Haggard) from 'The Lodger' make a return.
