BBC finally confirms UK air date

The BBC have finally confirmed what many of us already suspected:

Doctor Who returns to BBC One on Saturday 27th August 2011.

BBC America, among others, had already announced that the show would be returning on that day, leading to most people to speculate that it would return the same day in the UK. However, the BBC remained quiet on the subject. Until now.

They put out the news in a press release earlier today:

The wait is almost over. The seond part of the thrilling new series of Doctor Who begins on 27 August 2011.

The press release goes on to give the following overview of the rest of the series (if you don't want to know any more stop reading now).

The rules have changed, and the game is deadlier than ever. Out in the universe, where the earthly rules of time and space do not apply, Amy and Rory know only too well that their baby daughter needs them. For Melody Pond is destined to become River Song, mysterious archaeologist and convicted murderer – the woman who killed the best man she ever knew...

The Doctor leads Amy and Rory across centuries and galaxies in a desperate search for baby Melody, but a terrible and inescapable date looms large. At 5.02pm on 22nd April 2011, the Doctor will die. These are his last days, and the quest for Melody his final mission.

There are also little summaries for each of the remaining episodes, but as these are a bit more specific I won't put them here. You can read the press release for yourself HERE

Don't know about you, but I can't wait. Less than 2 weeks til the show returns.
