The Returning River?

As we have mentioned before, despite certain media outlets claiming that the sky is falling in on Doctor Who, the BBC itself are quite happy, and plans are already underway for series 7 of the show. Last night, at an ungodly hour when we were trying to get our beauty sleep, we got an interesting email about River Song and her place within the future of the show.

Because Alex Kingston who plays the mysterious time jumper lives in California, efforts have been made to make sure that the shows producers secure her availability for series 6. This is already in the bag we are told and she is already signed on for all the relevent episodes of the next series.

But now for the interesting part. The part that is either going to make you incredibly happy, or incredibly annoyed...

According to our source, Steven Moffat has been having 'secret' meetings with Alex and her agent about bringing her into the show full time for series 7. Alex, who loves working on the show has apparantly taken some persuading. Not because she wouldnt love the job, but because spending 9 months filming in the UK is a big commitment when she lives so far away.

It seems that Moffat though would have the gift of the gab, because earlier this week her Californian home was put up for sale and her team was said to be looking for a a base for her in Cardiff Bay, near to where the show is filmed.

Obviously if all this is true, then it will be a while before the BBC confirms anything, and as always we want to point out that this can only be treated as speculation for the time being, but it would certainly seem that we will be seeing a lot more of River Song in the future. How do you feel about that?

  1. Sounds interesting she will prob just be a 1 season companion and may even build up to silence in the library but hopefully before season 7 most timelines will be normal.

  2. I think (and I trust The Moff) that if he can get the balance right and a good lead up in Series 6, then her being constant in Series 7 could work... =) I dont think she would be a constant in Series 8 though... =)

  4. If it's true, I'm sorry to hear it. One of the great things about the last few seasons of Doctor Who has been seeing the crazy chaos of the Doctor's life and travels through the fresh eyes of his companion(s). We'd lose that with River Song as the full time companion; she has no wonder left in her. And she comes off as rather smug most of the time.

  7. I'm so excited if it's true. Alex Kingston is a brilliant actress and her chemistry with Matt Smith is awesome.

Amy/Rory/Eleven/River are the best Team TARDIS ever.

  8. It would be great if this turned out to be the beginning of their relationship in terms of Rivers time-line. That way she would be new to time-travelling and would only just be starting her journal.

  10. Pretty interesting development, if it turns out to ne true. This has been an amazing series with some tantalizing hooks in place for series 6, and now this new info about River and series 7. Wow! Trust the Moff to make it interesting - full time for series 7 could mean anything from companion to ... well, whatever the Moff comes up with, which is A-OK by me.

Is it time for S6 yet?

  11. I really want this to be true. It would mitigate the awfulness of having Rory as a full-time companion for series 6.

  13. I can only stand River as a recurring character not regular. There's more mystery having her recurring. Alex is a great actress. Frankly don't think they did enough with Rory and Amy as companions in Series 5 so hoping they make up for it in Series 6.
