The Doctor In The TARDIS Awards 2011

The awards are back for the second time and this year they have been expaned to cover fifteen seperate catagories. As with the first awards last year, the catagories for Best Doctor, Best Companion and Best Story have been split into Classic and New to make voting as fair as possible because while everyone has seen the show since it returned in 2005, not everyone is as familiar with the classic series and it deserves to get equal representation.

The awards for Best Villian has been modified slightly to cover a wider range and now sits alongside Best Alien/Monster Species. This will mean that individual baddies will be recognised apart from their race, for example. Restac could be nominated seperately from The Silurians. Other new catagories include Best Guest/One Off Character, Best Writer and Best Director.

As with last year, it is not compulsory to vote in every catagory. You can vote for as little as one or as many as fifteen when you submit your nominations, but votes will only count once so think carefully about your choices.

We had a tremendous response last year and we are looking for the same this year. There are many ways that you can sumbit your nominations. You can either send a DM via Twitter to either myself or PopRockGeek, or send us a PM on the forum (requires registration) or by sending a personal message via the facebook page. Alternatively, you can send an email to us HERE. Just copy and paste the catagories below, along with your answers in whichever way is easiest for you.

Is It The End For Arthur?

In an interview today with The London Evening Standard, it would seem that Arthur Darvil has accidently let slip that he is to bow out of the show at the end of the current series.

Whilst discussing his upcoming role Doctor Faustus at The Globe, Arthur commented:
"Getting a part like Rory was great, but now, coming out of it, I need to go and do something completely different."
After which, the interviewer noted that Darvill suddenly 'looked cornered, and clams up'.

This obviously isn't confirmation but it does certainly seem that Arthur let something slip that perhaps he shouldnt have, but then the exits of both himself and Karen Gillen have been widely speculated of late amongst fandom anyway, so might not come as much of a surprise to many.

What do you think? Is it time to wave goodbye or would you like to see more of the current companions?

Piers Wenger Is Leaving Doctor Who

In a press release earlier today, the BBC announced that Piers Wenger, co executive producer of Doctor Who, will be leaving the BBC, and therefore his duties on Doctor Who, for pastures new at Film4.

In the statement, the BBC said:
It's been confirmed that Piers Wenger, currently one of Doctor Who's three executive producers, is leaving the BBC.

Piers succeeded Julie Gardner as Head of Drama for BBC Wales and shortly after became executive producer of Doctor Who, taking an active role in the casting of Matt Smith as the Doctor. He also served as executive producer on Doctor Who: The Adventure Games and Doctor Who Confidential. Away from the TARDIS he worked on Ashes to Ashes, Christopher and His Kind and the relaunch of Upstairs Downstairs.
In March 2010 Piers stepped down as Head of Drama but remained at BBC Wales where he continued as creative leader for a number of key shows, including the award-winning Eric and Ernie.

He commented, 'It is with great sadness that I say goodbye to Doctor Who and BBC Drama, and all of the extraordinary people who I have worked with there.' Piers is leaving the BBC to join Film4 and everyone in the Doctor Who team would like to wish him the very best of luck in his new role.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish him well in his future endevours.

So where does this leave the team now? Will Piers be replaced or will Steven Moffat and Beth Willis take the reigns as a twosome?

BARB have updated their ratings for last weeks schedule, providing us with the official ratings for Day Of The Moon, and once again it is an excellent figure to be reported.

Episode two of the newest series rated at 5.4m on overnights but jumped a huge 1.91m on official ratings, the fourth biggest increase ever, to bring in a whopping 7.3 million for the episode.

These figures do not include the 1.5+ million viewers who have watched so far since it aired. The total TV share for the episode was an impressive 36.7%.

There are four videos below, one is a trailer, two are teaser clips and one is an introduction to the episode by Neil Gaiman and crew. All are brilliant and well worth watching.

Overnight Ratings Are In

The overnight ratings for last nights showing of Curse Of The Black Spot have come in and have shown a rise since last week.

The figures show that COTBS took in 6.2 million viewers whilst hitting a peak of 6.7 million. The show continued to bring in viewers throughout the episode which then dropped off again when the following show, So You Think You Can Dance, started. The show also grabbed an audience share of 30.9%

Given the recent trend for huge overnights, it is estimated that this episode will bring in close to 8 million viewers once official figures are released in about ten days. That figure thoguh will not include anybody who watches on iPlayer, a platform that will also see figures of over a million.

The Curse Of The Black Spot. Tonight!

Can you believe we are on to episode 3 already? Seems like only yesterday we were all itching to get the show back on our screens, but here we are almost half way through the run already.

Tonight we see the turn of The Curse Of The Black Spot.

The Doctors plans are thwarted, the TARDIS is marooned onboard a 17th-century pirate ship whose crew is being attacked by a mysterious and beautiful sea creature, as the time-travelling drama continues.

Becalmed and beset by cabin fever, the pirates have numerous superstitious explanations for the Siren's appearance. The Doctor has other ideas but, as his theories are disproved and every plan of escape is thwarted, he must work to win the trust of the implacable Captain Avery and uncover the truth behind the pirates' supernatural fears – and he must work quickly, for some of his friends have already fallen under the Siren's spell.

As always we will be discussing and disecting the episode over on the forum, so make sure you stop by after the episode has aired, sign up and join in the conversations by going to THE DOCTOR IN THE TARDIS FORUM. We look forward to seeing you there.

And here is a trailer to whet you appetite:

Is It The End For Amy & Rory?

Todays announcement that Arthur Darvil will be starring in Doctor Faustus at The Globe from June through October of this year has got people wondering about the future of the current companions on the show.

As well as Arthurs turn on the boards, Karen Gillan is also signed to star in a movie with Robert Sheehan as well as film a drama special for BBC4, further filling their respective schedules. But where does this leave Rory and Amy in terms of travelling with the Doctor? Over on the forum, Oh-Wise-One had this to say about the possible departure of Arthur:
According to the press release he will be in the stage show from 18th June through to 2nd October. There are a few things that would indicate why this might mean the end for Rory.
a) The Christmas Special is rumoured to start filming at the beginning of June, so he wouldnt be available because of rehearsals for the play.
b) If he is doing six plays a week until October, that would mean his continuing full time on Doctor who would push filming back for series 7 until October. It usually starts in July/August

But we could look at it another way

c) Series 7 could be cut down to fewer episodes, allowing for a later filming start including Arthur
d) Series 7 moves to the Autumn, again allowing for a later start to filming and the inclusion of Arthur

Either way though I would say that he won't be in the Christmas episode because that will definately be filmed before October when his play ends. I'd also wager that even if the launch of the series is pushed back to Autumn next year, the filming block will probably remain the same due to Moffs commitments to Sherlock, which will be on a strict schedule due to Martin Freemans commitment to The Hobbit.
Just to reitterate, this is all speculative at the moment, but with Karens schedule looking just as hectic over the coming months it would seem that the chances of either of them returning full time is starting to look slim. As stated above, there are ways and means around this, but it would seem far more likely that we will soon be due new companions.

The Impossible Astronaut Storming iPlayer

Despite some media outlets who would have us believe that the sky is falling in on Doctor Who, recent iPlayer statistics have revealed that The Impossible Astronaut is on its way to becoming the most watched programme on the platform ever.

After being available for just 12 days, The Impossible Astronaut has notched up an amazing 1.5million hits. The current most watched show on iPlayer which is The Eleventh Hour had only been seen on the iPlayer 1.27 million times within the same period. TIA now has an overall reach of over ten million viewers and growing.

The Impossible Astronaut has stiff competition from its next episode though because after just 4 days, Day of the Moon has managed to get 1.07million hits and is likely to grow significantly over the next week.

No More Sarah Jane Adventures

Reports have been coming in over the last few days in various newspapers that the BBC intend to film the three stories from Series 5 that were not finished before the death of Elisabeth Sladen, and air them along with the three that were later this year, but earlier this week the BBC released a statement claiming that due to the stars passing, the show would no longer continue.

Contrary to press reports we can confirm that no new episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures will be filmed following the tragic death of actress Elisabeth Sladen in April, 2011. As a tribute to Elisabeth the six episodes that were recorded with her last year will be broadcast on CBBC at a date to be confirmed.

The Rebel Flesh Synopsis

The BBC have released a synopsis for the upcoming episode five, The Rebel Flesh. The episode is due to air on May 21st with a provisional time of 6pm, though due to some schedule changes, that time may change closer to the date.

A solar tsunami sends the TARDIS hurtling towards a futuristic factory on Earth, where human doppelgangers are used to mine dangerous acid.

A second wave hits and the "Gangers" separate. They can remember every second of their "original's" life and feel every emotion they've ever experienced. But are these memories stolen or have they been bequeathed? Are the Gangers merely faulty machinery that must be shut down or are they living, breathing, sentient beings? Can the Doctor convince the terrified humans to accept these "almost people" and prevent an all-out civil war before the factory explodes?

Ten Teasers For The Curse Of The Black Spot

Digital Spy have compiled ten little teasers from tomorrows episode of Doctor Who, The Curse of the Black Spot. They aren't particularly spoilery, but you might want to avert your eyes all the same.

01. This is definitely an episode of two halves, with a big twist 30 minutes in.

02. There's more than one stowaway aboard Captain Avery's craft.

03. "Look at these brilliant pirates! Look at their brilliant beards!"

04. The Doctor once again laments his lack of a hat, but is soon sporting a new type of headgear.

05. The Tardis apparently contains a bedroom, a kitchen, and several bathrooms.

06. "I want to say 'multi-dimensional engineering', but since you had a problem with 'sensors', I won't go there."

07. One man's greed could spell doom for the ship and its crew.

08. The Doctor makes a mistake that places his friends in peril.

09. Remember the mysterious woman with the silver eyepatch? She's back!

10. The Doctor gets rather intimate with his Tardis.
