Sam Hodges, who is the Head of Communications for BBC1, has today confirmed that Doctor Who has been commissioned for a further fourteen episodes, taking it through to Christmas 2012 and that Matt Smith will be continuing in the role.
Steven Moffat has today further confirmed this by tweeting:
14 eps + Matt DEFINITELY. I've got a plan and I'm NOT TELLING YOU WHAT IT ISBased on interviews given in the last two weeks by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, it is looking unlikely that they will be returning as companions beyond series 6.
