Christmas Special Watchathon - Tonight


In case you didn't know already, tonight is the night of our forum rewatch of The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, giving you all a chance to join in with a mass rewatch and a group discussion about the 2011 Christmas Special.

The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe On DVD & BluRay


It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home, in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor.

Coming to DVD on January 16th is the 2011 Christmas Special, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe. No announcement about bonus features has been made yet, but according to the cover art you can expect over 2 hours of extras. Prices vary, but the best offer we have found so far is from the BBC Shop where you can get the standard DVD for £6.99 or the Blu-Ray: £8.99.

Ratings For The Christmas Special


Official ratings for this year's Christmas Special, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe have been announced at 10.77m viewers with a time shift of 1.85 million, becoming the third most watched show of the week. The show also managed to take the largest audience share of any show for the evening with 37.3% of the available audience tuning into the show during it's timeslot.

These figures don't include the people who tuned in to iPlayer to see the episode within 7 days.

The BBC have released a prequel to the 2011 Christmas Special as part of their Doctor Who advent calendar & here it is for you all to enjoy:



The Doctor, the Widow & the Wardrobe will air on BBC One & BBC One HD at 7pm on Christmas Day.

Synopsis for The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe


The official synopsis for the Christmas Special has been released:

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home, in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor.

He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish.

Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever.

The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true…

The Doctor, the Widow & the Wardrobe is expected to air on BBC One on Christmas Day like previous Christmas Specials. The time will be announced nearer to Christmas.

Christmas Special title & trailer

The title of this year's Christmas special was revealed on tonight's Children in Need.

It is 'The Doctor, The Widow & the Wardrobe.'

We can infer from it that the story will possibly be loosely based on C.S Lewis's classic story 'The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.'

The title of the Christmas Special is to be revealed on Children in Need in the UK tonight. Fans will also get to see a sneak peek at the episode.

As well as those treats a special scene has been recorded especially for the charity event, and below you can see an image from it:


To see the Doctor Who goodies tune in between 8 & 8.30pm on BBC One.

It doesn't give much away, but I would imagine it will get people speculating about what exactly is going to happen in this year's festive episode.

BBC reveals Christmas Special 2011 info

The BBC have this morning released some information about the 2011 Christmas episode of Doctor Who.

Firstly they have given us a few of the guest stars. They are:


Arabella Weir (The Fast Show, Posh Nosh)


Alexander Armstrong (voice of Mr Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures)


Bill Bailey (Black Books, Spaced)


Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Life Begins)

They have also revealed the following outline of the plot of the episode:

The special, set during World War II, sees Madge Arwell (Skinner) & her two children, Lily & Cyril, evacuated to a draughty old house in Dorset, where the caretaker is a mysterious young man in a bow tie, & a big blue parcel is waiting for them under the tree. They are about to enter a magical new world & learn that a Time Lord never forgets his debts ...

Amy & Rory Confirmed For Christmas Special

Filming on this years Christmas Special has been continuing in Wales, with scenes being filmed yesterday in Bute Esplanade, where Amy and Rory's new home is situated, with Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill both seen on set.


DoctorWhoSpoilers has got their hands on some photographs, which you can see has the houses decked out in Christmas lights with the TARDIS prop situated on the opposite side of the street.

This filming comes after last weeks reports of filming at Stradey Castle in Llanelli. It was previously unknown whether or not the due would be a part of this year's special, though Karen Gillan has previously confirmed that they will make appearances throughout series 7.

Pics from the set of the Christmas Special

Wales Online has posted some pics from the shooting of the Doctor Who Christmas Special. They show Matt Smith in costume & Outnumbered star Claire Skinner in what appears to be a outfit from the early 20th Century. They don't give much away but it's good to know filming is underway.
