Review: I, Davros - Purity

Following on from Peri's review of part one, I, Davros - Innocence, today we bring to you the second part of the series, Purity.

The Daleks have listened to Davros's story and dismiss him as just an inferior child, but he believes he was more of a man than those who surrounded him. The Council of Twelve, busy passing their judgements in the House of Congress, never saw what was coming because they were too scared of his intelligence, aptitude and determination. It would be many years before the Supremo, that weak, spineless individual who believed he ruled the city, would finally enable Davros to realise his potential. Until then it was only Davros's mother who believed in him. The rest of them feared him, and they were right to do so...

This story isnt a direct continuation of the first story, though it does tie in nicely with previous events. First off I am going to say that if you havent listened to the first then this is ok to listen to and understand but there will be things in it that you probably wont get because they reference the first audio as apposed to stuff you may have seen on screen.

So we rejoin Davros as he get nearer to his 30th birthday. Miserable in the Kaled military he is longing to join the Science Corps in a bid to extend his works and use his knowledge for the good of the Kaled/Thal war. When Davros is summoned before the Supremo he initially begins an egotistical rant about how he is better than most of his superiors and is being unfairly held back from helping the war effort in a more scientific way, but the Supremo surprises him by saying that his work has actually been monitered in a very close way and that he wants Davros to undertake a secret mission that could help the Kaleds win the war against the Thals. He won't reveal what the mission is but says that Davros's position in the Science Corps will be pretty much secured if he accepts, albeit within the recycling division. Davros accepts straight away but the Supremo tells him to sleep on it before agreeing.

When Davros goes home he encounters his sister and after a conversation about genocide and extinct races as casualties of war, his sister becomes more wary of him and convinced that he is becoming a psychopath who will bring disaster and distruction because of his beliefs that the Thals should be iradicated. His sister tries to explain that the Thals and Kaleds once lived together in peace and could do so again, but Davros is convinced she is lying and dismisses her as needed therapy. When his mother arrives home she stirs up the pot by saying that the recent peace is a bad thing and the Thals, being a lower class as she considers, should be wiped out, fuelling Davros' fire. There is also a hint that his family think he may be gay as up to now he has refused to get a wife, which his family needs to happen so they can have access to the family trust fund which is currently held in his name. When Davros accidently lets slip about his secret mission, the family is torn about the best interests of him and their lifestyle. He realises though he has said too much and refuses to say anymore.

Im skipping a fair bit here which is mainly character stuff and fastforwarding to this: Davros accepts the mission and along with his team makes his way over enemy lines. When they happen upon a weapons factory, Davros and anothermember of his group break inside and take pictures and evidence. They realise the expense that went into the factory and that just destroying it would cripple the Thals, but they are soon captured and one of the Thals knows Davros by name. Before any questioning can take place though Davros' Major shoots the Thals and saves them. While on their way from the Thal city they are attacked by snipers and Varga Plants and very few of their number are left surviving. Davros works out that the whole mission has been a set up and demands to know whether the intention was to have him killed. When they are backed into a corner by a group of scavengers, two of the four remaining soldiers are killed and it is left to Davros and his friend Reston to make their way home. (Ive missed out a big spoiler here that links back to the first audio). When they reach the home lines, Reston is badly wounded by their own defense systems and begs Davros to end his life. Davros at first is reluctant to kill his friend but then becomes so enraged that this man doesnt want to live at absolutely any cost, that he angrilly takes his pistol and kills him anyway.

We cut to Davros in the hospital after being rescued and where he is being visited by his mother. At first he is convinced that it was she who betrayed his mission, but after being persuaded otherwise and ruling out the Supremo, he decides that it must have been his sister. His mother fuels this belief and agrees to sort the situation. She returns home and finds his sister in the pool and tells her that Davros has died over enemy lines. She convinces her that if she gave the game away about his mission then she is now safe to admit it. His sister admits that she was scared of Davros and only wants peace and so mentioned it to some of her Peace Treaty friends but never wanted him dead. His mum accuses her of being a threat to Davros' greatness and proceeds to drown her in the pool. When she next visits Davros she tells him that she found her daughter drowing in the pool and that her last words were that she loved her. They agree to put word out that she has been murdered by rebel Thals.

At the end of the story Davros is standing over the body of his dead sister preparing her autopsy. He leans in and tells her corpse that despite her hatred of science she will make a great contribution. He cuts into her body and plans to combine her genetic makeup with that of a Thal and a Varga Plant to make the greatest weapon the planet has ever seen....

Ok, this story is brilliant. There isnt a whole lot more that I can add. Ive cut out a massive section of it to keep it spoiler free but the gist of it is there. At 70 minutes this story is absolutely jam packed with story and quite honestly could have been split into two. For those of you who like it dark, this is possibly the darkest audio adventure I have ever listened to. At times spine tingling, at times just down right creepy, this story goes to places you wouldnt expect of a DW related release but is pure brilliance. Whether you are a fan of Davros or not, you cant fail to be taken in with this story and its even better if you have listened to part one as well. The back story of the Varga Plants which I have largely left out of this review, is also really unnerving. Get this! Thats all I have to say.

Desktop Patrol Dalek - a review

This isn't a new piece of merchandise but it's still available & I've been talking to my family about it today (in fact I convinced my grandad to buy one - shame I didn't know he'd be interested before as it would have made a useful Father's Day present!) so it's fresh in my mind. For that reason I thought I'd share the review I wrote for the forum with you.

Ok I'll start up with what it says on the box:

Patrols your desk for hours, never bumping into anything or falling off!

Simply switch on the Dalek & watch him go! In-built sensors detect nearby objects & the ground in-front of it. As it turns, the Dalek lets out the classic 'Exterminate' sound.

I got one these guys for Christmas. Understandably being a bit of a Dalek nut these days I was keen to get it up & running. Happily I had been bought some batteries as well (it takes 3xAAA) as they are not included in the box (it does clearly state this on the back). After a lengthy battle to actually remove it from the packaging (it was screwed to the card) I was eventually good to go.

So ... does it live up to it's boast?

Well ... no. But, for me at least, that's the actual joy of it. It's way more fun to watch it bang into things & shove them around all the while yelling 'Exterminate!' I love the fact that it doesn't even attempt to take the path of least resistance but relentlessly seems to go at things. And yes I even enjoy it when it falls on the floor! (Please keep all comments about little things & little minds to yourselves) I suppose there's the possibility mine's got a fault (although it does on occasion 'behave' as it should) but I don't care. I think I would've got bored if it literally just went back & forth.

As for the look - I know a lot of people don't like the new Dalek look, and I'll admit it doesn't look as good as my Ironside figure, but it actually looks a lot better up close than they perhaps come across on the TV. And it's red, which is my fave colour so that's another point in its favour for me.

Summing up then - it might not do what it says on the tin but it gets a thumbs up from me.

The Desktop Patrol Dalek is currently retailing at £13.99 from Forbidden Planet. It's been out for a while now though so it may pay off to shop around a bit.

Skaro Revisited?

Moffat has made some obscure references in this months DWM magazine, which some people (secretly myself included) are thinking/hoping may mean that we will be seeing a return visit to Skaro.

When referring to the Doctor he mentions how he 'remembers being on Skaro with Leela' and how the production team were trying to figure out who has met the Daleks and Davros.

Whether this is idle chit chat on set that the Moff has decided to use to drive us crazy with speculation or hints at something to come is anyones guess, but for the moment lets treat it as a bit of fun yet wild speculation.

Return Of The Old School Daleks

After all the furore surrounding the new and colourful Daleks, Steven Moffat has gone on record to say that they were only created as a way to get money out of the BBC because they only had 3 Dalek props in storage, and that the old RTD style ones will be making their return.

With that in mind, we wanted to know in our latest poll if you were happy with this.

2% of the people who voted said that they would prefer to stick with the new design seen in Series 5
24% said they dont want to see the Daleks return in any form
35% of voters said they like both designs so would be happy to see either

But just inching ahead, 39% of the people who voted said that they would prefer to see a return to the older design as they dont like the new one.

So there we have it. Do you agree with these results? Let us know below. The polls return on Monday.

The Return of the Daleks Poll

With the rumours that the Daleks may be rested for the duration of Series 6, then used for the 2011 Christmas Special, our latest poll was to find out whether you would like to see this put into practice. For the last 24 you have been voting and here are the results.

9% of people who voted said that they thought the Daleks should make an appearance every year, and would hope that they are also appearing in series 6.

19% of people said they didnt mind either way, and were happy to have them or not have them in the next series.

But a massive 72% of the people who voted felt that the Daleks had become tired and resting them for series 6 would be a good idea. Most people felt that the impact they used to have has been undermined by their constant reappearances.

Do you agree with these results? Let us know below

A Rest For The Daleks?

There are some whispers from various people that The Daleks will be missing from the entirity of Series 6, to stop them feeling overused.

The Daleks, which have appeared at least once in every series since the shows return, underwent a makeover for series 5 which caused many fans to speak out to say they hated the new look and were tired of seeing them so often.

It seems though that perhaps the production team are feeling the same, because if rumours are to be believed we won't be seeing them again for over a year, when they return in explosive style for the 2011 Christmas Special.

As always, if I dont have proof of something then I advise you to take these rumours with a pinch of salt for the time being, but with all this in mind, how would you feel about a Dalek-less Series 6? Let us know below or via Twitter.

Exterminating Plaque and Decay

Though I wouldnt usually reccomend putting anything related to a Dalek in any orifice, Forbidden Planet will soon be releasing a new Dalek Sonic Toothbrush, and it made me laugh so I thought I would share it.

The Toothbrush will be available from August 31st priced at £9.99 and you can pre-order it HERE

The First Ever BBC Dalek Graphic Novel

The good people of BBC Books have revealed the first few pages of The Only Good Dalek, the first ever original Doctor Who graphic novel to be released by the BBC. The graphic novel features the Eleventh Doctor and Amy once again facing off with the Daleks and was written by Justin Richards with art by Mike Collins and is released September 16th priced at £16.99.

The synopsis given by the BBc is as follows...

“Station 7 is where the Earth Forces send all the equipment captured in their unceasing war against the Daleks. It’s where Dalek technology is analysed and examined. It’s where the Doctor and Amy have just arrived. But somehow the Daleks have found out about Station 7 – and there’s something there that they want back.

“With the Doctor increasingly worried about the direction the Station’s research is taking, the commander of Station 7 knows he has only one possible, desperate, defence. Because the last terrible secret of Station 7 is that they don’t only store captured Dalek technology. It’s also a prison. And the only thing that might stop a Dalek is another Dalek…”

And if you feel like you can't wait until September, they have also released the first page. Ooh aren't they lovely?

The Dalek Redesign Poll Results

Well that's it guys, the poll is closed, the votes have been counted and we can now reveal the outcome of 24 hours worth of voting about how you feel about the Dalek redesign.

Earlier this week int our Dalek Debate article, we detailed the strong fan reaction to the new look colourful Daleks that debuted in series 5. We followed that up with our poll to find out what you all thought about them, and here is how you voted.

YES, THEY LOOK GREAT - A massive 38% of you voted to say that you loved the new look Daleks, with coments on Twitter mainly highlighting the new colour scheme and size which seemed quite 'threatening'.

NO, THEY LOOK AWFUL - 30% of voters say they hated the new design, with many calling for the old look Daleks to make a comeback. Criticisms ranged from saying the Daleks looked like overweight iPods, to them being a marketing ploy to make money.

THEY ARE OK I GUESS - 21% of you are indifferent to the new designs. It seems for some, the Daleks of any design are a welcome addition to the show.

And finally...

THEY ARE STILL GROWING ON ME - A small percentage of you, 9% to be exact, say that the Daleks are still growing on you and are pretty much undecided.

So there we have it. Despite the overwhelming negativity that the Daleks faced when we saw then in Victory of the Daleks, it seems that the tides are turning and the majority of you now like the new design. Who saw that one coming? We certainly didnt.

The Dalek Debate

Well well, who could have imagined the massive divide that the new look Daleks have caused this year. From their first outing in Victory of the Daleks, to their return in The Pandorica Opens, opinion has taken on a somewhat Marmite effect. People are either loving them or hating them, but it's been a long time since we remember something splitting fandom so mercilessly down the middle.

The new look models, with their bulkier mid section and their bright 'all the colours of the skittle rainbow' colour schemes have been mocked, ridiculed, loved and loathed in equal measures, but it seems the majority of fandom are now calling for the Daleks to be put to rest.

The new design, seen by many as a ploy to sell more action figures, hasnt gone down to well, but with no sign of them reverting to their older, more original look, it seems people would now prefer that they didnt show up at all. They have, after all, appeared in around 8 stories since the show returned in 2005, more than any other villain, and they are seen by many to have outstayed their welcome. Add to that their new comparison to overweight Power Rangers, and it seems that their appearances in future episodes just simply isnt welcome.

It is well known that the BBC made demands for the return of the Daleks, seeing them as the driving force of popularity behind the show, but with rumours of the BBC also insisting that they appear every single year, it seems that despite quality falling, we will be graced with their presence for as long as the show airs.

And so to the debate. Well, two actually. Firstly, what are your opinions of the new designs, and do you think the Daleks have outstayed their welcome and need to be rested for a few years? Of course on the other hand, do you think maybe we should see more of them? Let us know
