A Night At The Live Tour - Review

As some of you may know, last night I finally got to attend the Doctor Who Live Tour. I cant begin to tell you how amazing it was. I will start by saying however, that I just spent half hour writing all about how amazing it was but then my computer crashed, so this is more of an abridged version.

Seeing all those Doctor Who villains up close was superb and long time dream of mine, and luckily we had absolutely amazing seats. I have to admit when I heard that lesser knowns like the Scarecrows and Clockwork Droids were going to be there I wasnt that excited, but seeing them up close was brilliant and worked so well. The Scarecrows particularly were very creepy but were also raised a few laughs as they chased audience members around during the interval to get people back to their seats. One kid in particular screamed his lungs out when they chased him.

The orchestra were brilliant and brilliantly conducted and the atmosphere when they were all playing was electric. Listening to the music as the clips played over the screen was brilliant and they accompanied the monsters brilliantly. The acting was on top form also. Nigel Planer was superbly camp as Vogenson and the scenes with Matt Smith were really funny and written so well. It was just a shame he wasnt on stage as part of the show.

The villains themselves were brilliant. Being that close to them after seeing them all on screen for so many years gave a feeling that was indescribable. I was like a 7 year old filled with excitement. When the Judoon came up to us and assimilated us with there alien tech thing it was one of the best moments ever!!!! They are genuinly terrifying up close and being just a few feet away from them was such an amazing experience.

I didnt realise before how much of a fan of the Cybermen I was, but I spent the entire night waiting for them to come out and when they finally did I let out the biggest squee ever. They came marching past us, about 3 feet away and looked superb. The kids in the audience were terrified and I just had this feeling that is so hard to put down in words, but it was like 50 years worth of history was stood in front of me and it was amazing. Such a great exciting and nostalgic feeling seeing them right in front of us. It wasnt like we were watching actors in suits, you just fell right into the story and believed there were really Ood and Cybers and whatnot stood in front of you. It was brilliant.

The Daleks, I have to say, looked fantastic. Completely different to how they appear on screen. They were so big and imposing and they really did take your breath away. I still think they dont translate too brilliantly on screen, but up close and in person in all their different colours they looked so impressive and scary. I totally get what Moffat was thinking now. Its just a shame they dont look so great on the TV because they have the ability to scare you witless.

The insert scenes shown on the big screen were really great. When they went through the regenerations towards the end, the crowd lapped it up and cheered like mad men, but when it got to 9,10 and 11 they raised the roof. Matt had the biggest cheer of all, but Ten was a very close second and you could tell he was still fresh in the minds of so many of them. The tribute to Amy Pond was also brilliant. They chose all the very best scenes and it was so poignant and well put together. The crowd went wild for it.

I cant begin to tell you how exciting the evening was and I was so glad I went. It was brilliant from start to finish and I would go again in a heartbeat. It made me feel like a child again and the atmosphere was superb. The first review I wrote was far better than this and a while lot more detailed, but my laptop crashing zapped the energy out of me to write it all out again, but this covers most of it I think. I also have a few pictures for you all too. They arent that great though. I took about 60, but I only had my iPhone with me and they dont have zoom or flash so I had to make do and most came out blurry. It looks like im quite far away in the pictures, but we were really close to the stage and all the monsters came right past and interacted with us. Though only the Judoon targeted us personally. Ill never forget that! A brilliant experience for everyone.

Live Tour Opens To Rave Reviews

Last night, The Doctor Who Live Tour started its run at Wembley Arena to a packed out audience which included Matt Smith along with his girlfriend Daisy Lowe and his family, and even Catherine Tate, who played the Doctors companion Donna Noble was in attendence.

As you may expect, there was also a lot of press at the show and in this mornings reports, they all give unanimous praise to the show, its story, its monsters and its special effects.

The Doctor, in his filmed inserts, was given rave reviews and rapturous applause from fans and the monsters were all well received, with the Weeping Angels getting the loudest screams when they appeared and did away with a group of policemen.

A twist at the end of the show has also been revealed, which for once I wont spoil on here, but any of you planning to attend are going to be in for a treat and I can't wait until it is my turn to take my seat in the audience later in the month. After the next two London shows, the tour will move on to Sheffield.

Matt & Karen To Feature Heavily In Live Show

Will Brenton, who is directing the upcoming Doctor Who Live Tour has revealed some more information regarding the event.
"There's a lot of Matt," he confirmed. "We've been filming some special sequences with him for the show. We were orginally hoping to have five or six minutes with him. We've ended up with a lot more than that. He's intrinsic to the way the whole show unfolds and we've got a neat little gizmo for how he appears at one point as well."

"Karen's in there in that there's a specific Amy section of the show... and then she appears in various other... clip sections," he said. "It's very series five focused... in terms of the content and the monsters that we've got."

Carnival Of Monsters: The Sequel

SFX has confirmed that the Doctor Who Live Tour will act as a sort of sequel to the Third Doctor serial, Carnival Of Monsters from 1973.

Will Brenton, who is directing the tour, had this to say:
“When I first came aboard this project, it was a project very akin to the Prom offering and what I thought we needed to do was bring this space alive a lot more, by making it a narrative that takes place in real time, in that Arena at that moment. Which is what we’ve done.

“So we’ve created a brand new Doctor Who character – called Vorgenson, but it is a character who grows out of previous Doctor Who story, called ‘Carnival Of Monsters’. All of its genealogy grows out of that episode. And the fans who spotted that reference will enjoy how it happens. It’s taken what happened in that episode and moved it on, and updated it and had some fun with it as well.

“And that’s the kind of collaboration that we’ve been having. I sat down with Steven and said, ‘I’ve got this Jurassic Park kind of feel, with a character who’s reeling out these characters,’ and he immediately said, ‘Well, ‘Carnival Of Monsters’! Let’s let it grow out of that.’”

Planer will play a character called Vorgensen, a travelling showman who carries the story. The overall plot of the shows has been revealed also.

The character apparantly journeys the galaxy spreading tales of the Doctor's exploits and using his "minimiser" gadget he can conjure up any of the Time Lord's foes for his audience.

Doctor Who Live Tour Information

Ok, we know a lot of this information was released on Friday, but we want to keep you all in the loop nonetheless, and we didnt exist on Friday so without the use of the Tardis and causing a paradox, we couldnt go back to inform you.

So anyways, the BBC have confirmed the full lineup of Whoniverse baddies for this year's Doctor Who Live tour, and it promises to be quite the spectacle.

Everybody's favourites(!) the Daleks will be making their presence felt, as will the Cybermen, Weeping Angels, Judoon, Silurian, Smilers, Clockwork Robots, Winders, Scarecrows, Vampires and of course, the Ood.

The show is going to be set in wartime Britain and will climax with an on-stage battle. Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have filmed special inserts as their respective characters that will appear throughout the show on the video screens.

The show will apparantly feature pyrotechnics, optical illusions and special effects alongside clips of the show and the newly-filmed sequences, which will all be accompanied by composer Murray Gold's score played live by a 16-piece orchestra.

The full tour dates are as follows:

•October 8-10 - London, Wembley Arena
•October 12-13 - Sheffield, Arena
•October 14-17 - Glasgow SECC
•October 18-20 - Birmingham, NIA

•October 25-26 - Nottingham, Trent FM Arena
•October 28-31 - Cardiff, International Arena
•November 2-3 - Liverpool, Echo Arena
•November 6-7 - Belfast, Odyssey Arena

We will be attneding the Manchester event, and we want to know if anyone else is attending, and at which venue. We would also like you to write a review of your experience and of the show, and we will put the best ones onto the site.
