The Impossible Astronaut Ratings and Share - Updated

So Saturday saw the launch of the latest series of The Impossible Astronaut and overnight figures show that the episode enjoyed 6.52 million viewers in the UK, taking a 36.7% share.

Now this is down on previous years of the show, but despite what some areas of fandom would have you believe, the sky is far from falling in. 36.7% of the audience is nearly the same proportion as what The Eleventh Hour managed last year with its 8+m launch. What this indicates is that whilst the number of people watching as it aired was down, the percentage of the total viewing audience remained as strong as ever and hadnt just abandoned the show to watch something else.

When compared to the rest of its timeslot, the number of people watching TV across the whole board was significantly lower than this time last year. Doctor Who, whilst having a lower audience than perhaps expected, still managed to be the only show on any channel within its timeslot to get more than 2m viewers, so to get over six and a half million is great in the circumstances. It was the second most watched show of the night also.

What also needs to be remembered is that these are unnoficial overnights and we will have to wait nearly two weeks until we know the exact figure, which should see the figure rise by at least a million.

Now we are by no means trying to imply that these figures are perfect. It is still likely that TIA will end up being the lowest launch yet in terms of people watching as it airs, but when factors such as iPlayer are included it is likely that this episode will fall into line with other series and what we have come to expect.

And we got through all of that without once blaming the weather of the bank holiday weekend....

UPDATE!!! - The Appreciation Index for this weeks episode was released yesterday, and The Impossible Astronaut came off with an excellent score of 88. By comparison, only two episodes of series 5 scored 88 or higher, The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang. It would seem the majority of fans think that series 6 has got off to a brilliant start.

Tribute Podcast To Elisabeth Sladen

After the sudden and sad death of Elisabeth Sladen last week, some of us from The Doctor In The TARDIS Podcast team got together to record a special short dedication to the actress.

Apologies to all those who sent in messages if they weren't included. We had over 100 responses so not all of them could be read out. Those who recorded messages, unfortunately we were not able to include them due to a fault with uploading the audio, however we did listen to them all and then write them out in order to be read by the team.

The Hand Of Fear Re-Televised

In tribute to Elisabeth Sladen who sadly passed away last week, the BBC will be re-showing her final serial as full time companion Sarah Jane Smith, The Hand Of Fear, on BBC4.

According to the Radio Times, the episodes will be shown accross the 9th and 10th of May as a special tribute to the actress who played Sarah Jane for almost 40 years. No times are known at the moment but we will keep you posted.

Chariots Of Fire

As filming on series 6 of Doctor Who drew to a close this weekend, the crew took to the streets of Cardiff and surprised onlookers with some extraordinary scenes.

The filming, which took place in the city centre and out at Bute Park saw a host of familar faces returning, so look away if you don't want to know who.

Filming this weekend saw the return of little Amelia, young Rory, Winston Churchill, Bearded Doctor, The Silents, The Romans and some Nazis, and there were no doubt more that just weren't seen.

It seems that people from all over history are spilling out onto the streets of modern day Cardiff (or wherever they will pretend Cardiff is in the latest episode) as they also filmed what appeared to be a chariot chase through the streets as this photo posted on the forum shows.

First Look At Gibbis

Here is David Walliams as his character Gibbis from the Toby Whithouse penned episode, The God Complex, which will be coming on air after the mid series split. The image comes from a sneak look at filming the episode in the newest Insider video from BBCA.

Gibbis has previously been described as 'mole-like' and that can certainly be seen here by his features.

Insider Video Part 5 - On The Set

The latest installment from the BBCA Insider video catches the team on the set of Episode 11, which is called The God Complex and is penned by Toby Whithouse. If you look closely you will even spot David Walliams in his role as Gibbis.

The Impossible Astronaut Ratings and Share

Apologies for the lateness with all the latest news, I was taken down with a nasty bout of man-flu over the weekend, but now that I am feeling a little better the updates can commence.

Todays BBC Lineup

Ok, so this is probably already burned into your memory, or scribbled on the back of your hand in bic pen, or saved on your Sky+ box, but just to be on the safe side, here is todays Doctor Who line up!

Kicking off this evenings events on BBC 1 and HD at 6PM is The Impossible Astronaut, the first episode of the newest series of Doctor Who

The Doctor and his friends are reunited under mysterious circumstances, as the science-fiction drama returns for a new series. Amy, Rory, River and the Doctor receive a series of numbered envelopes, each containing a date, time and map reference. These messages bring them together in the middle of the Utah desert, where the Doctor's friends learn a terrible secret that must be kept from the Time Lord at all costs. But who sent the envelopes, and who received the missing number one? Their quest for answers takes the TARDIS crew to the Oval Office, where President Richard Nixon enlists their help in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman.

At 18.45 over on the CBBC Channel, My Sarah Jane: A Tribue To Elisabeth Sladen will air. It is a 15 minute tribute to the actress who sadly passed away this week, with thoughts and comments from friends and colleagues of the star

Then, at 7pm on BBC 3 we have Doctor Who Confidential...

In Utah, the episode director tries to find the perfect movie-style backdrop to one of the most ambitious scenes to date, Matt Smith dons his stetson and gives a run-down of the USA filming and the crew talk about the thrills of filming in the Utah desert. Back on home ground, there's the creation of the Oval Office, the much-debated return of River Song and a whole load of backstage action from this spectacular two-parter. Featuring interviews with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Alex Kingston.

Don't miss a single minute of it, and to discuss it all, make sure you join us over at THE DOCTOR IN THE TARDIS FORUM

Is It Time For New Companions - Poll Results

For the last four days you have been voting in your hundreds to tell us your thoughts about whether or not it is time for the current companion team to pack up and leave the TARDIS once series 6 comes to a close. This is what you thought:

8% of the people who voted said they disliked both Amy and Rory and would be glad to have them replaced with someone new to travel with the Doctor.

9% of the people who votes said that they would like to see Amy continue travelling with the Doctor, but would like to see Rory leave.

10% however, felt the complete opposite and said they would like to see Rory stick around to travel with the Doctor, and that Amy should leave.

19% of the people who cast a vote said that they loved the current companions, but are now ready to have some new faces on board the TARDIS instead.

But with an overwhelming number of the votes, 54% of everybody who voted said they wanted to see Amy and Rory continue on for at least one more year beyond series 6.

So there we have it. Do you agree with the majority? Let us know below.

Is It Time For New Companions? - Vote Now

As one poll ends, another one starts and this week we want to know if you think that it is time to have a change of faces in the TARDIS.

The amount of time the companions have stayed travelling with the Doctor has varied throughout the years, but since the show returned in 2005 we have become more accustomed to a shorter stint from the sidekick. The current companions, Amy and Rory, are entering their second year of travelling with the Doctor but at the end of series 6 will it be time for them to go and for a new face to come aboard?

The poll is over there to the right of the screen and you have until Friday 22nd April to get those votes in.

Review: Third Doctor Audiobook - Inferno

Todays review is brought to you by Chris Newman, who originally posted it on the forum 17/04/11. So without further ado, I shall hand you over to Chris....

I shall let the blurb on the back of the box speak to you in ways I could only ever dream of...

Inferno is the name of a top-secret drilling project to penetrate the Earth's crust and release a major new energy source. A crisis develops when a noxious green liquid leaks out as drilling progresses - the green poison has a grotesquely debilitating effect on human beings. As the Earth's plight worsens, the Doctor is trapped in a parallel world, unable to rescue the planet and its inhabitants from the destructive force of Inferno...Caroline John, who played Liz Shaw in the original "Doctor Who" TV serial, reads Terrance Dicks' complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1984

Let us make no mistake here my friends, when you start with such a brilliant story, you are working from a very strong base and the novelisation delivers every thrill and twist of the TV series. The novel is a fairly accurate replication of the Don Houghton teleplay and Terrance Dicks is such an accomplished story-teller that he gets full value out of all of the delicate contrasts between our universe and that of the parallel one. Perhaps because he was script editor or maybe simply because he is a very good Doctor Who novelist, Dicks actually sets the scene for the drilling project rather better than is done in the TV show - we get some exposition about the intense government pressure which in turn helps explain the pressure on Sir Keith and Stahlmann. Where the novel does surprise is that Dicks goes beyond his usual utilitarian approach and seems to revel in the characterisations. One really gets the sense of the main protagonists and the dilemmas that this story produces for each of them. You have a definitive mad scientist, you have a grizzled Oil Rigger, you have an Ice-Maiden assistant. In both universes these characters remain relatively constant. It is the characters we are familiar with that Dicks has most fun twisting and changing. Whereas Liz Shaw's parallel 'comes good' at the end, the Brigade Leader remains resolutely cowardly right to the end. Dicks has the 'voice' of the Third Doctor almost pitch perfect and this resounds throughout this wonderful tale. As with every great Doctor Who story, the Doctor is the hero and he is the glue that holds this together, but it is a Doctor that is beautifully drawn and realised by Dicks.

The production is of the usual high standard with some very good supporting music and sound effects to underpin Carrie John's excellent narration. Sometimes I find John a little harsh but in this she is excellent and manages to drop in a hint of accent to give a wonderful flavour of each of the characters.

This is an ideal companion to those long commutes or nights where you can't get to sleep. It is a beautifully written, beautifully read novelisation of one of the finest Doctor Who stories of all time. I guarantee your world will be ever so slightly better if you buy this audiobook.

A Dedication To Lis Sladen On CBBC

A special 15 minute special will air at 6.45 on Saturday on the CBBC channel between BBC1's Doctor Who Launch and BBC3's Confidential.
Elisabeth Sladen created one of Doctor Who's best loved and most enduring characters, Sarah Jane Smith. For over 35 years she brought the feisty, compassionate journalist to life, creating a figure that was adored by audiences of all ages - truly a heroine whose appeal had no boundaries.

This 15 minute programme is both a tribute and a celebration of Elisabeth Sladen. It brings together stories from friends and colleagues and draws on a rich archive of material to remind us of Sarah Jane's journey, from companion to the Third Doctor to the central character in CBBC's award-winning The Sarah Jane Adventures.
The programme will be uploaded to the blog later that day for fans in other countries who are unable to view it on broadcast.

The Sarah Jane Adventures Companion Volume 2

A reminder that the long awaited second volume of The Sarah Jane Companion from DWM has been announced and will hit shelves from tomorrow.

The 116 page special will feature interviews, pictures, cast notes and story details from The Sarah Jane Adventures. The cover art is below.

Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith

Last nights announcement that Lis Sladen had passed away has sent shockwaves through fandom, and indeed the whole entertainment community. Tributes have been pouring in via Twitter, the forum and facebook from hundreds and thousands of people saddened by the news of her passing.

As Sarah Jane Smith, Lis Sladen was a familiar face to millions of people accross the world. Her brilliant portrayal of the intrepdid reporter and her warmth and charm won her legions of fans across many generations and is a proud testament to the fact that nearly 40 years after her very first appearance in Doctor Who, the character is still at the forefront of peoples affections and at the height of her popularity.

Companions in Doctor Who come and go, but very few have had the longevity that Sarah Jane Smith has enjoyed, which is due in large part to the respect that Elisabeth Sladen gave the show, the character and most importantly the fans. Always friendly and warm and willing to chat, she understood, perhaps more than most, why this crazy group of people kept tuning in each week. She knew just how much the show meant to us all and was respectful of that because it had always been equally as important to her.

Elisabeth Sladen was one of the brightest lights in the Whoniverse, and the sky will shine a little dimmer now that she has gone. But she can rest in peace knowing that she will be so very fondly remembered by so many millions of people, and that Sarah Jane Smith will live on in the hearts and minds of fans for generations to come.

Tributes Come In From Russell T Davies And Steven Moffat

The death of Elisabeth Sladen today has been felt accross the world and tributes have been coming in from fans everywhere, not least from Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat, quote possibly her biggest fans of all.

Russell T Davies:
"I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful. The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis."

Steven Moffat
"'Never meet your heroes' wise people say. They weren't thinking of Lis Sladen.

Sarah Jane Smith was everybody's hero when I was younger, and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories. But many years later, when I met the real Sarah Jane - Lis Sladen herself - she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be. Kind and gentle and clever; and a ferociously talented actress, of course, but in that perfectly English unassuming way.

There are a blessed few who can carry a whole television show on their talent and charisma - but I can't think of one other who's done it quite so politely. I once showed my son Joshua an old episode of Doctor Who, in which Lis appeared. "But that's Sarah Jane," he said, confused "In old Doctor Who. From years ago. How come she always look exactly the same?" It's not a comfort today, of course, but children will still be saying that fifty years from now."

A Tribute To Sarah Jane Smith

Sarah Jane Smith was part of the childhood and adulthood of millions of people accross the globe, and her sad passing today will have an effect on many. But she will forever be remembered as the greatest companion who ever stepped foot into that big blue box.

RIP Elisabeth Sladen - 1948-2011

Lis Sladen Has Sadly Passed Away

A Thread has been set up at the forum for any fans who wish to leave messages of respect and condolence and our hearts go out to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.

More If I Had A Time Machine...

Yesterday we brought to you two videos from Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill telling us what they would do if they had a time machine, and today it is the turn of Steven Moffat. If you want to know what the head writer for Doctor Who would do if he had a time machine of his own, check out the video below.

Which Story Are You Most Excited For? Poll Results

Ok, so you've had days to sit and ponder and put your votes in to let us know which of the 5 upcoming stories you are most looking forward too, and once again you came out in force to make your choices, so without further ado, here is how the voting went down.

Receiving just 3% of the votes and coming in last place is episode 3, The Curse Of The Black Spot. This story will see The Doctor, Amy and Rory aboard a 17th century pirate ship and an ethereal blue sea siren in the form of Lily Cole, but even all that wasn't enough to get you all excited.

Coming only slightly ahead of that is this years second two parter, The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People. Taking place in a monastry full of half finished clones, only 5% of the voters said they were most excited for this story.

Third place on our poll is handed to A Good Man Goes To War. Taking 17% of the vote, the mid series finale will see the reveal of River Songs secret and the return of many old villains, but it still wasn't enough to take the top spot.

Our runner up, with 35% of the total votes in the Neil Gaiman penned episode The Doctor's Wife. The story, rumoured to feature the return of the Time Lords and something not seen since The War Games was in the lead for much of the poll, but was finally beaten by...

The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon, which took the title of Most Anticipated Upcoming Story with 40% of the final votes. The opening two parter will see the TARDIS Team travelling to Utah in the USA, battling the Silents and the MIB and coming face to face with Nixon himself. And for the 40% of you who made this the winner as the story you are most want to see, the great news is that there is now only 6 days left to wait for it.

If I Had A Time Machine...

BBC America has uploaded two clips featuring Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill telling us what they would do if they had a time machine. If one surfaces of Matt Smith it will be uploaded later, but for now check out what they had to say.

Of the 8 photos below, 7 are promos from the opening two parter, but the last one is one comes from episode three. Shame they are a little Rory-lite, but they are great nonetheless
